Georg Kolbe Museum

„Come here on a Sunday, have a little breakfast, read the papers, wander around, feel grown up and forget for a minute you live in a big city.”

At some point in the summer, I always get asked by somebody relatively new to the city, “What’s a good getaway when you want to leave Berlin?”

It’s one of those questions that makes me feel a bit pressured as a local. Georg Kolbe Museum is more like a place you can visit if you don’t want to go on an hour-long drive but want to feel like you’re not in Berlin anymore.

It’s quiet and peaceful, and the party scene of the city feels very far away. Jump on the S-Bahn and get off at Heerstraße— it’s just a quick walk from there. The museum is a beautiful private brick villa that shows the sculptural works of Georg Kolbe. It’s also got a cute little café. Come here on a Sunday, have a little breakfast, read the papers, wander around, feel grown up and forget for a minute you live in a big city.
