Potsdam, the capital of Brandenburg, is located on the River Havel just southwest of Berlin. The former residence of Prussian kings and the German Kaiser until 1918, the city is home to Sanssouci, the summer palace of Prussian king Frederick the Great and the largest world heritage site in Germany. Originally designed to reflect a “pastoral dream”, Potsdam’s beautiful architecture has become a hub for the sciences, with three public colleges and more than 30 research institutes calling the city home. Potsdam also has a very active lake and water sports culture, and visitors can find swimming locations and boat tours on the Havel or at any of the many bodies of water surrounding the city.
